Living and working in St Ives, Cornwall, Liz Hough continues the Modern British tradition of abstract landscape painting. In this collection of works she is reflecting on a recent trip to Italy and commenting on her own connection to place, be it though experiencing the warm earth colours of the Tuscan hills, finding form and line, or abstracting from the Italian landscape.
The construction of her paintings mirrors the geological architecture of the landscape which inspires them. She begins by allowing the colours of the landscape to wash over her on her regular sketching trips, carrying these impressions back to her studio. She will then disgorge them on bits of paper, mixing a palette which describes the specific feeling of place she has just experienced.
Addressing and interpreting ideas of ‘place’ in this way, she captures the real essence of rural landscapes. Her soft palette, eye for harmonious colour combinations, and rhythmic application of pattern make these works visually and emotionally appealing. With their links to St Ives and to British Modernism, Liz’s works are beginning to attract serious attention, with pieces now held in both private and public collections.
Liz Hough was born in 1966. Studied Fine Art at Manchester, then completed her Post Graduate studies at the RA Schools in 1991. Her achievements include Leverhulme Trust and Landseer Scholarships, Daler Rowney Prize at the RA Summer Exhibition and Creswick Prize for Landscape Painting at the Royal Academy Premiums Exhibition.
Liz tutors at the St Ives School of Painting and regularly runs painting courses in Tuscany, Italy.
