Alison Orchard

‘I am passionate about painting direct from the landscape and feel most inspired when I am surrounded by big skies and nature. Close to home, I paint the landscapes of the Surrey Hills but I also enjoy walking the coastal path in Cornwall, discovering small intimate coves. Skies are a source of constant inspiration; perched on a cliff edge painting, you feel incredibly small against the vastness of the sky and the curve of the horizon.’

Alison is best known for her atmospheric paintings of seascapes and landscapes and is a strong believer in painting directly from the landscape. She works primarily in oil, acrylic and mixed media with gestural mark-making, surface texture, rich colour and generous palette-knifed paint. She has regular painting trips to Cornwall, soaking up its dramatic coastlines, which provide a great source of inspiration.

‘I am passionate about painting direct from the landscape and feel most inspired when I am surrounded by big skies and nature. Close to home, I paint the landscapes of the Surrey Hills but I also enjoy walking the coastal path in Cornwall, discovering small intimate coves. Skies are a source of constant inspiration; perched on a cliff edge painting, you feel incredibly small against the vastness of the sky and the curve of the horizon. Back at my studio I experiment more with colour and enjoy pushing the limits of the paint. Using oils, acrylics and mixed media, developing layers with the palette knife, adding glazes of colour and rubbing back to reveal what is below. With expressive mark-making, rich colour and lots of paint, I try to capture the freshness and energy of the crashing waves and the rich colours in the rock face, beach or landscape. Always drawn towards abstraction and the exploration of the paint surface; I am continually pushing myself to capture the true essence of a place’.

Alison was born in Wimbledon in 1971. She first attended St. Ives School of Art in 1986 and at the age of 18 won the Scott, Brownrigg & Turner Award for Art, which funded a painting trip around Europe. She continued her art education at Epsom School of Art & Design (Foundation Diploma) and Harrow College, University of Westminster (B.A. hons). Alison enjoyed a successful career as a commercial illustrator and designer, working for several national newspapers and going on to run her own business. Throughout this time she continued to paint and draw and had her debut solo exhibition ‘Arvor’ at GalleryOne, Surrey, in 2009. In 2014 she was one of 20 international artists to be chosen for accreditation as a Golden Artist Educator. Alison’s work has a growing following and is held in private collections. Her paintings have been exhibited at The Royal College of Art, London and at various art fairs, with exhibitions in South East England, London, Guernsey & Portugal.
