JJ Cavanagh-Butler

Cavanagh-Butler was born in London and grew up in both London and Dorset.  She studied at Goldsmiths College, Chelsea College of Art and The Heatherley School of Fine Art. Her paintings are based on her fascination with the changing effects of light and the seasons using colour and tone to create and capture emotion.

She worked in film and television production and ran her own design company before becoming a full-time artist. ‘The constructing and creation of moving images, …the overall practice of communication interests me, how the message is conveyed via the construction of shots and angles ….maybe there’s a correlation between the moving image and the moving landscape’, she explains.

Over the last two years her work has become increasingly abstract developing in new directions. Based on her fascination with the changing effects of light and the seasons she deconstructs her imagery employing colour and tone to create and capture emotion. Her paintings have a jewel like intensity in her juxtaposition of vibrant hues which she combines with her gestural brushstrokes – the seeming freedom of the paint belying her carefully constructed compositions. She has exhibited in London, Dorset and Kenya and her work is in private collections both in the UK and abroad recent shows include The Foundry Gallery, 39 Old Church Street Chelsea, London and Lilly Hastedt, London.
