In her paintings Lucy explores the ever-changing rhythms of the landscape with her dynamic compositions, initially working directly in the environment to intuitively capture the moment. She has a particular interest in the landscape of Sussex and the South Downs, painting en plein air in all seasons and all weathers.
Once back in her studio, she will develop her initial sketches. Lucy works to remove any indications of direct topography, instead wanting to depict an imagined or suggested space which leaves room for the viewer’s interpretation. Lucy’s impasto, expressive marks perfectly capture a landscape buffeted by constant movement. She uses a juxtaposition of colours and textures to convey the physicality of her subject, exploring the artist’s sensory relationship to the landscape.
Lucy Marks holds an MA in Fine Art from Brighton University. Her work has been exhibited at the RA Summer Show and selected for the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition. She has been awarded several prizes, including the Chelsea Arts Society Sloane Medal, the Humphrey’s Purchase Prize at the ING Discerning Eye in 2019. She is an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society, a member of the Chelsea Arts Society and the Society of Women Artists. In 2021 she had a major show at Petworth House ‘Dawn to Dusk exploring the landscape and changing conditions of Petworth Park. Last year her exhibition 'Constables Walks' was held at the RWS gallery in London. She has an upcoming solo show at the Royal Watercolour Society Galleries in September 2024, entitled ‘Times of the Day’. Her work is collected widely across the UK and abroad and she exhibits at a number of galleries in London and the South East.
