Sarah’s work is inspired by the countryside in West Sussex where she now lives and evolves from sketches made during long walks along the South Downs Way. The rich colours of the fields and far-reaching valleys and floodplains around the River Arun often feature in her paintings.
Sarah studied at Central St. Martins for a BA in Fashion and Illustration. After graduating she worked in Paris, London and Milan freelance illustrating for international magazines and newspapers, before joining Fleet Street as a fashion and news journalist. After ten years Sarah left to pursue painting full time.
Her work retains much of the sensitivity and energy first developed during her early years spent in Cornwall as a student living near the Porthmeor Studios in St. Ives and the artists of the St Ives school have had a lasting effect on her work. These semi-abstract oils and prints capture the light, atmosphere and harmonious rhythm of the countryside surrounding the South Downs. They balance abstract composition with a real sense of observed place and atmosphere.
Sarah is also a highly accomplished expressionistic printmaker, she regularly exhibits with the New English Art Club, Royal Society of British Artists and Pastel Society at the Mall Galleries London and W H Patterson. She is a member of the Printmakers Council.
