Gabrielle (Ella) Moulding grew up in the idyllic countryside of the Cotswolds, studied in Scotland at Edinburgh University, and worked in the Fine Arts industry in London. For 17 years she lived with her family around the world in France, South Africa, South Korea, Australia, Japan and the USA. She now lives in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
Gabrielle's paintings are inspired by the light in the landscapes, seascapes and urban world around her. The beauty of the everyday, the gesture of the figure, the clarity and changes in the light in a still life, the pattern and composition of the landscape, are all the starting points in her work. Her practice involves painting in watercolour, gouache and drawing in charcoal within her chosen landscape ‘en plein air’. These studies are used as inspiration for larger compositions at home. In the studio, oil and acrylic paintings are evoked by her memories within the landscapes rather than direct representations. She enjoys the ‘push’ and ‘pull’ process of painting and mark making to capture and express the landscape. She likes to work in a painterly style and is not afraid to let the intuitive process take over. She is becoming more excited about the possibilities of abstraction in her work.
She has exhibited in Sydney, Tokyo, New York, New Jersey, London at the Mall Galleries and Bankside and in the Provinces. In 2022 she was selected as an artist in residence at Noce Fresca in Sardinia. In 2023, she was artist in residence at the The Scuola Internazionale di Grafica Venezia, Italy. In 2024 she is one of the artists selected to work in residence at the prestigious Tyrone Guthrie centre for creative art in Ireland. She was elected a member for Chelsea Art Society in 2023.
