Sarah Bowman

Born into a family with a tradition of painting, Sarah grew up in the Frome valley of Dorset. She attended Wimbledon School of Art and Falmouth College of Art. During her time spent in Falmouth, she was drawn to the landscapes of the West Country. She then moved to Edinburgh as Gallery Director to Nexus Galleries, a collection of three contemporary art galleries where she was much influenced by Scottish artists such as Elizabeth Blackadder and William Gillies and subsequently began working on still life paintings.

Sarah paints intuitively, her imagined landscapes inspired by memory. They are often amalgamated views of places she has visited: Cornwall, Devon, the Scilly Isles, and Andalucía. Her landscapes are influenced by the inherited tradition of the St Ives School, alongside an important visit to Tuscany in her late teens to see the Renaissance fresco paintings. Her muted, warm palette, the succumbed texture of her paint, and the defined tonal value all reflect this influence. Whereas her combination of still life and landscapes viewed through foregrounded windows, demonstrates her inheritance of the St Ives School tradition. Sarah lives in Devon where her husband owns an art gallery. This recent collection of paintings is inspired by her garden and her love of travel. 'My garden has always been a source of inspiration in my work; with the flowers I pick in the changing seasons and place in my window paintings. This lock down, I metaphorically climbed out the window and immersed myself in the sanctuary of the garden. I also think that’s why I produced the Mallorcan paintings; I need to escape to somewhere inaccessible at that time and feel the warmth of the palette of Mallorca. I’ve really enjoyed painting them and am thankful that this extraordinary time has taken my painting in a new direction.' Sarah was the 2005 winner of the Mary Fedden Award, Royal West of England Academy and was a finalist in the 2001 Noble Grossart Painting Prize. She regularly exhibits her work in London and Devon.
