Drawing, for Sigrid Muller, is something emotional. This patient observation of form and colour taps into the purity of experiencing an object. She comes to her subjects without preconceptions, understanding them through looking at and experiencing them fully. Her process is meticulous: many layers of fine pencil crayon are drawn delicately on backgrounds of watercolour washes. These backgrounds are as considered as her drawings, providing a suggested world for her subjects to inhabit, suspended.
Sigrid’s work sensitively portrays her subjects. She is drawn to things of fragility and tenderness such as bird eggs and wild poppies. Breathing life into them with each stroke of the pencil, their fragility is fortified and protected. By drawing objects of such delicacy, she captures the taught precipice of beauty. Off canvas, their decay hangs in the balance, making these works of tension, precision, and reverence.
Sigrid Müller was born in Germany and studied for her Diploma in Graphic Design at the Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences in Nuremberg. A few years after graduating, she moved to Wales and pursued a career as a full-time artist. She is very influenced by things she finds in the nearby Aberglasney gardens, preferring to happen upon natural subjects rather than growing them purposefully. She has been exhibiting with the Martin Tinney Gallery for over twenty years and her work was purchased by The Derek Williams Trust for the National Museum of Wales in 2001. In 2014, Sigrid was second prize-winner in the prestigious Jerwood Drawing Prize Competition and in 2016 The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea purchased two of her paintings for their Permanent Collection. In 2018, her work was selected for the 250th Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Sigrid’s work is held in private collections throughout the UK and abroad.
