Michael has always had a fascination with how things work: ‘as a child, when my train set broke, I enjoyed taking it apart to find out why it wasn’t working, fix it and then put it back together again.’ This enthusiasm for the anatomy of things led him first to study medicine and practice as a doctor, and then to create kinetic sculptures.
Michael finds delight in movement. His kinetic sculptures are inspired by the natural world, such as flowers, seeds, or fish. His work is beautiful when stationary but comes to life when animated by the elements. His segmented fish swim in the wind, and his windflowers imitate buffeted seeds. They work best placed into the landscape, where they can freely oscillate in the air and elements.
Michael holds a BA and MA in Fine Art from Falmouth Art College. His work has received much acclaim. He has permanent installations at the Eden Project and Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, and he has created pieces for The Hospital Club, Shaftesbury Avenue, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, and Brighton Marina. Michael’s work is held in many private collections and is exhibited internationally.
