Dominic Welch left school after completing his A-levels and moved to Exmoor to become apprenticed to the sculptor Peter Randall-Page. He worked with him for a decade, learning the intricacies of stone carving. Randall-Page, along with Modernists such as Brancusi and Isamu Noguchi, have been the formative influences on his work.
The smooth surface of Kilkenny Limestone is the preferred medium for his fluid abstract forms with their curvilinear incisions. The purity of his forms evoke natural harmonies that calm the senses and give free reign to the imagination, suggesting universal truths. Many of his carved pod and sphere forms suggest seeds or embryos with the promise of future growth. They reflect the natural harmonies found within nature but leave much to the imagination of the viewer.
Dominic has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad over the past 15 years to increasing success and acclaim. He has shown in Australia, Canada, United States of America and Japan. As a result, his work can be found in collections all over the world.
